[LANG] Pushing out 3.4

Hi guys,

we have a few new features and bug fixes in trunk and the last release was
a while ago. I'd like to move the release train forward, so I'm planning to
cut 3.4-RC1 this weekend.

Make the changes to trunk, that you would like to have included in the next
release.

Gary has worked a lot in the past few days (thanks for that!) and I need
more time to review the state of the code base. So I'll push RC1 later this
month.
