Java Sampler - reading Arguments

I am trying to retrieve a file name using the Java Sampler using the
following:

getDefaultParameters().getArgument(0).toString()

there is only one line in list of variables which read:

filename   TestData.txt

but it returns:

filenamenullTestData.txt

what is this happening and is there anyways I can fix it?
