postgresql clob

I know this has been asked before but I couldn't find a satisfying answer:

What do I have to do to use CLOBs in PostgreSQL? Is the patched driver
enough? Do I have to follow the the proposal on db.apache for
postgresql/CLOB (It is sometimes referred to as outdated).

...or are there alternatives for storing long character data (working in
postgreSQL again. Loading "VARBINARY" seems also not to work correctly).
