I opened this issue to write down the idea.

I may get to it some day, but it is not a priority for me, more like an idle pursuit.

You could develop with an all localhost configuration to start, until some basic function is working well enough to test with real load. No need for HDFS at all. Use HBase in non-distributed mode with files backed by the local filesystem and start a local Stargate instance. 

But be advised there are Stargate side changes required as well. See all of the related jiras.

Thank you for the quick response, Andrew.

I would like to work on this.  Though, my C/C++ skills are rusty.  I'll get
a test cluster ready next week, and then we'll take it from there.  Would a
3 node (1NN + 2DN) be enough to start?
