Our J2SE bootstrap does not provide the ability to exercise the following:

- contribution <import.java> pointing to contributions loaded by
different classloaders
I'm hoping that the folks working on OSGI will help with that, as
suggested in the SCA spec and discussed on tuscany-dev in [1]

- components running in a single JVM in different classloaders
+1 to Raymond's comment, the Geronimo/Tuscany integration will be a good
real environment to exercise that.

I don't know details of whats happening in Geronimo, is it getting support
for all the things like incremental updates, isolated class loaders,
import/export etc, and if so could more of that work happen here in Tuscany
so it can be shared by other things like Tomcat integration / webapps /
what-ever-else that comes along? I think its important to have this here in
Tuscany so will try to continue working on things like the webapp
distribution, seems a shame to be duplicating work thats going on elsewhere.

I think we need to have a good balance here. Writing a new Tuscany server is
exciting. For those who already run their applications on existing host
environment such as Tomcat and Geronimo, maybe it's more desirable to have
Tuscany to be well integrated/embedded. I agree with you that we need to
have something real that exercises the new features. IMHO, Tuscany/Geronimo
integration will be a good testbed.

How about we create such an environment? We seemed to be getting lots of new
function added these days - for things like starting and stopping,
incremental updates, this import/export stuff, etc - but nothing that
actually properly uses the function, and then issues like the above
mentioned class loader problem meaning its actually not at all easy to use
the function when you do try to. I don't think thats so good for the project
as it makes it hard to understand why things a getting so complicated, so
wouldn't it be better to have something 'real' that exercises that code? How
about we create an environment that properly demonstrates using multiple
contributions and all the code and function we're adding around that?

Right, SCA Java imports will only be effective in environments using a
different classloader per SCA contribution, which we have not
encountered yet. I'd suggest to revisit this when we encounter such an
environment. For now adding support for Java import/export only helps
validate the import/export extensibility mechanism.

To overcome the limitations with ContributionPostProcessor I have added
a strawman of some support for Contribution listeners:
o.a.t.contribution.service.ContributionListener and
ContributionListenerExtensionPoint.

Here's how to use it:
- Get the ContributionListenerExtensionPoint from the extension point
regsitry
- Add your ContributionListener to it
- A ContributionListener implements contributionAdded,
contributionRemoved, contributionUpdated methods allowing it to be
notified of these events and process the contribution (e.g. connect
imports to exports, disconnect them when a contribution gets removed)
- ContributionListener is also passed an instance of
ContributionRepository, which allows you to find contributions by URI or
get the list of all contributions
- To get this to work I also simplified ContributionServiceImpl a bit
which was using two different registries of contributions before:
contributionRepository and contributionRegistry. It's only using
contributionRepository to track which contributions are there now.

I hope this helps. With this I think you should now be able to:
- Remove the dependency from contribution-impl on contribution-java
- Plug in the logic to connect/disconnect imports -> exports in a
ContributionListener implemented in the contribution-java module
- Move the logic for XML namespace imports to a separate
ContributionListener as well (which could stay in contribution-impl)

Finally, I think that the logic in ImportSDOPostProcessor could be
refactored as a listener as well. In fact I marked
ContributionPostProcessor deprecated for now as ContributionListener
provides equivalent + more complete function.

Ok, ArtifactProcessor.resolve is probably not the right method to do
that then, as it doesn't have the correct context.
ContributionPostProcessor.visit seems more promising, but it is not
given the list of available contributions. I'll take a look at what
you've done and see if I can come up with any ideas.

Posted by Luciano Resende <lu...@gmail.com>.
Thanks for checking Sebastien, most is in SVN now, and I have already
cleaned up the classLoader issue you mentioned. Indeed, I have couple
questions...

   - We need a better extensible way to handle the matching of
import/export to proper initialize the resolvers. I have looked into
using the ArtifactProcessor.resolve to handle part of this (as
suggested on the code comments), but I could think about couple issues
: the processor might bot have all the required dependencies to proper
find the matching import/export and to initialize the resolvers, also
the processors might be contributed by the not really be tied together
with the module that implementing the import/export support (java
case). So, any ideas are welcome... For now, TUSCANY-1488 [1] shows a
workaround that is working on top of svn.

   - Another issue I noticed is regarding resolving classReferences.
Because loading a given class would never fails (no class loader
isolation) there is never going to be delegation to the proper
modelResolver from a contribution that is exporting the package. Any
ideas here ? Or should we revisit this when we enhance classLoader
support?

Support for SCA Java package imports/exports, was: svn commit: r559257

Posted by Jean-Sebastien Delfino <js...@apache.org>.
I've been looking into some of the model resolvers and some of them
still pass a ClassLoader around. I'd like to fix that and leverage the
Java resolver extension in the contribution-java module, but that module
is empty...

How is that work going? Are you planning to add these resolvers for Java
imports/exports sometime this week? do you need any help to implement them?

Thanks.
