Its not clear to me how your method would work - also why not just use StringUtils.replaceEach() from Commons Lang:

http://commons.apache.org/lang/api-release/org/apache/commons/lang/StringUtils.html#replaceEach(java.lang.String, java.lang.String[], java.lang.String[])
