[MARKETING] OFBiz New Website Structure Proposals – Feedback Required

Hi Everyone

Thanks very much for the feedback on my thread about updating our current
website. Based on suggestions from the community I've put together a couple
of diagrams that show a proposed structure for the new OFBiz website.

Please note that these proposals are only meant as guides so we are still
open to getting feedback on any suggested changes.

The first option is :
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OFBIZ/Draft+Website+Structure+-+Option+A

The second option is:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OFBIZ/Draft+Website+Structure+Option+B+-+Work+in+Progress

Next we need to get feedback from the community to understand which is the
most preferred, so please can you respond back to this thread with your
thoughts, suggestions, comments.

Thanks
Sharan

Hi Sharan,

Thanks for you work on this, thanks also to Nick and Taher :)

Like Taher (no surprise ;)) and Jacopo I prefer option B.

Unlike Taher and as suggested Adrian I wonder if separating solutions by roles could not be interesting, for marketing purpose of course.

I also prefer the content of Team menu over About, at least About miss a ref to Contributors.
In solution B, Press (In A only) should be in News also. I know this is shrinking but is still important, often more professional articles.

I'd rename "Inventory Management" "Inventory and Order Management". Nothing about Accounting?

Like Taher I like the Partners Menu

I guess we can do even better, but that's quite a good start! Remember though that a number of links must be present on the main page... most of those
in left bar... The Copyright in footer as well.

My 2cts

For what it's worth, I prefer Option B. Consumers tend to seek
innovation from products themselves while expecting familiarity from the
product's web page navigation/design.

Is there any way to sneak the term "Entrepreneur" in there somewhere as
a sub-menu item? Feature creep, yes, although I find that entrepreneurs
tend to become excited about a product when they see something at its
web site that makes them think "These people understand me and my dream."

Hi Sharan,

I like option B more than option A.
I am not sure about the real need for the "Solutions" subtree, that information may be part of the "Documentation" subtree.

Thanks for the great effort,

Jacopo

Good idea. There is a lot of overlap between roles.
This makes it easier to write content and harder to manage the navigation.

RE: [MARKETING] OFBiz New Website Structure Proposals – Feedback Required

Posted by Nick Rosser <nr...@solveda.com>.
Sharan,

Nice job, never easy putting this stuff together.

I like pieces from both – this can’t be an “A” or “B” choice. My 2 cents:

Getting Started (B). I like this – I think that most new visitors will click into the section. I would have Business Users before Developers –

Solutions (combine from A and B). I like the “By Role” approach. I would look to combine so we would have Solutions -> By Role (with sub options of CEO, CIO etc) and Solutions -> by Business Need (with sub options of ERP, E-Commerce etc.).

Documentation (B). A must have, imo.

Customers (A). If I’m evaluating OFBiz I would absolutely want to see who else has adopted the platform.

Partners (A), same thinking as “Customers”.

Community (B). I would combine items from Community / About and News into here. This can also have links to more developer focused content and links.

I also think that the Home Page can have a big impact on the layout. For example, Latest News could be on the Home Page (with a link to “All News”) which lessens the priority for having News prominently available on the NavBar. This is the same for the landing pages for the major navbar items.

It’s always difficult to put this together and get it right the first time, and right for all viewers. Nice start!

Hi Sharan,

I think B is a more classic implementation, very clear.

But i really like the idea of having an entry point "by role", it might be only x pages with links to other parts of the website, where we gather most interesting things for each role...

Putting it into "Getting Started" menu seems a good way to include it into B design (already got dev and Business User there) .

Thanks for the work !

Hi Sharan,

To me also option B seems to be better structured. Maybe under Getting
Started > Business Users you might add a page with "Implementers". Like that
a true business user could really get started.

Thanks for the great effort Sharan.

I think we should find better terms for "Customers" and "Patrners": theese two don't apply well to an open source project and community and are more suited for a company site.

Hi Sharan,

many thanks for your work on this, it's much appreciated!

Unfortunately, I had not the time to look at it but I hope to find an
hour in the next days before the OCD. Just to inform you that there's
interest...

Hi Everyone

Thanks for your additional feedback and I also agree with a lot of the
comments made. By trying to incorporate all the previous feedback I think
I've made the structure more complicated than it needs to be.

I will update the latest proposed version with this feedback and hopefully
streamline it again.

Thanks
Sharan

The old UI golden rule by Apple (before Windows with all "its" - sometimes creazy applications - existed) was that "you shall not have more than 3
levels menus". This to say that I tend to agree with Taher here. Thought I'm not sure Sharan's intention was to create 3rd level menus. Because I have
never seen that on web pages (or I forgot), where you have only horizontal menus entries with each vertical sub-menus. Most of the times we indeed put
what would be 3rd level menus as links into pages, this is something you can't easily do out of the HTML paradigm.

+1, but then will need more redirections

Moot point, but again the HTML paradigm allows for more solutions than 2nd level menus... It's all about creativity...

I want to add that I'm all for Subscriptions and Reservations pages, good idea. We have already those pages for starting
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OFBIZ/Subscription
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OFBIZ/Proposal+for+Plane,+Bus,+Restaurant+and+Cinema+Seats
The 2nd should be amended/completed

Sharan,

Your 2nd review with feedbacks (and there were many with such great
community) is fine to get something done along the great work you do.
I am in line with Taher suggestions of the top layout - hence the site
will be dynamic to adapt to future changes and suggestions.

Moreover, the content value shall be clearly exposed to allow the target
audience to get a RAPID graps of the OOTB solution vs others alternative.

Hi Sharan,

I looked at the structure and have the following suggestions / comments:

- on a second review, we have too many sub-menus. This can be overwhelming to people navigating the website. Instead, you might take the content of the sub-menus and sprinkle it around the pages
- I suggest removing partners and making it part of the community menu. It does not add a lot of value to make it a top level menu item.
- I would suggest reordering the menus to be -> getting started, news, solutions, documentation, community, customers
- perhaps we can drop all menu items under solutions, and make that part of the text and layout of the page

These are my thoughts for now. HTH

Hi Everyone

Please see below for a link to a revised proposal for our new website
structure.

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OFBIZ/New+Website+Structure+Based+on+Combined+Feedback

I've tried to incorporate as much feedback as I can. The Solutions menu uses
all the descriptions that we currently use to describe what people can do
with OFBiz on our home page. I've added a couple that we don't really
publicise too much but could be interesting for specific customers (e.g.
managing subscriptions as also reservations and bookings)

Once again, please let me have your feedback and comments to see if we now
have a website structure proposal that people are generally happy with.

Thanks
Sharan

Hi Everyone

Thank you all very much for your feedback and comments. The general opinion
appears to be option B with some minor changes.

I will draft a ‘modified option B’ trying to incorporate as many of your
suggestions as I can.

Thanks

I am not sure that I see any advantage in dropdown menus in the footer.
Once you have reached the bottom of the page on a web site it is pretty
simple to scroll down further to see more links.
You are in an area of unlimited length and I think that most sites just
put some frequently referenced links there to save people the
inconvenience of navigating the main menu through it's dropdown links.

That's looking great, Sharan, thanks for the effort.

Does anyone like the idea of having one of those slideshow things as a
page header (right beneath the menu), sliding between images which
showcase the various items from the Solutions group? I'm rather behind
the site development curve, so I don't know how far into the
architecture phase things are (e.g. Bootstrap or something similar?).

I agree that the Download option should be prominent, but also leave it
in its current menu position. Offering surfers multiple ways to access
the download page is a good thing.

If you want to cram a ton of additional links into the footer (as per
Taher's latest suggestion), consider a drop-up menu which reflects the
functionality (if not the content) of the main menu.

Thanks Sharan!

I think we should now define the content of the main page. Then when the implementation will be done, I'm sure we will have to again change things
here and there but that's quite a good start

Hi Pierre

Thanks for the feedback.

I was thinking that modules could be individual the manager applications
themselves with their related features (e.g. Party Manager).

I see the solutions part as how one or more applications could be used
together to create an integrated solution around particular business flows.
I would expect some cross linking between the two so we just need to see how
it could work.

Thanks

Hi Sharan,

It is looking good. But if I may suggest the following:

   - Download of the latest stable release should be on the front-page,
because that is one of the main Items we want (potential) users to use.
With a link directly below/beside that where other downloads can be found.

What is the intended difference between the 'modules & Features' block and
the Solutions block? It seems both are related, no?

Best regards,

Hi All

Thanks very for your positive feedback on the work done so far.

I think it’s time for us to move on to the next step which involves using
this structure to put together a proposed design for the main page and site.

The team working on this at the moment will be myself, Taher and Fernando.
We may end up with several variations but I think once we have something
visible to show the community, it will be easier for people to see what it
could look like and understand how it could work.

We will be sharing any proposed design (or designs) with the community for
feedback and comments so please watch out for our progress updates.

Thanks
Sharan

- I think twitter feeds do not warrant their own full page. and I also don't see a lot of difference between blog and press.
- you can create either a filter, a header, or a table to show users by industry and even other categories inside the page.
- A lot of websites put lots of links into the footer area for lesser used links and as a form of secondary navigation. So we do not need to have everything that exists in the main menu necessarily.

so overall I would suggest that we always follow a "less is more" philosophy and make new menu items where it is necessary and makes sense.

With that being said, great job and I don't see a problem with going with this design immediately even without applying the above.

Cheers,

Hi Everyone

This is my latest update for the proposed website structure. I’ve removed
the second level menus and added notes about included specific links.

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OFBIZ/Revised+Website+Structure+v2

I’ve adjusted the menu sequence based on feedback from Taher and others, and
also completely removed ‘Solutions’ as a menu option since we can
incorporate this within the home page itself.

I hope that this latest revision will be acceptable to the community and we
can start working towards reaching a consensus. As usual please let me have
your comments and feedback.

Thanks
Sharan

Re: [MARKETING] OFBiz New Website Structure Proposals – Feedback Required

Hi Sharan,

To me, option B seems easier on the eyes and puts everything logically in its place. Option A on the other hand seems to be structured in a way that is emphasizing things that might not be necessary to all audiences.

For example, a listing of solutions is simpler that listing of solutions by role. Not everyone joining will be a CFO or CIO. Also, I see no big distinction between products and solutions to make it into two different menus. The platform menu does not seem to warrant a top level menu and can go in the documentation under the technical documentation. The part I really like from option A is partners and customers. So maybe we can put the news menu under community and make a top level menu called customers and partners. Or maybe we can do the exact opposite.

The main menu is important, and should be logical and easy on the eyes. Having something like team and platform as top level menu items is taking space that can be better organized with items like those listed in option B.

Cheers, and thank you for the great work.

Hi Everyone

Thanks very much for the feedback on my thread about updating our current
website. Based on suggestions from the community I've put together a couple
of diagrams that show a proposed structure for the new OFBiz website.

Please note that these proposals are only meant as guides so we are still
open to getting feedback on any suggested changes.

The first option is :
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OFBIZ/Draft+Website+Structure+-+Option+A

The second option is:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OFBIZ/Draft+Website+Structure+Option+B+-+Work+in+Progress

Next we need to get feedback from the community to understand which is the
most preferred, so please can you respond back to this thread with your
thoughts, suggestions, comments.

Thanks
Sharan
