Invoking client-based executables from a web server

I am running a web app on Tomcat 4.0.  I would like this app to be able to
invoke remote executables (e.g. a DLL) located on the client that is
accessing this web app.  These clients are predominantly Win32 machines and
the access would be via IE or Netscape.  Can anybody offer me a suggestion
of what to use to accomplish this task and/or a link to an example?
