can not Initialize class member

I'm tryng to recompile xerces 1.3 but in domstring.cpp 

in lines like "int DOMString::gTotalStringHandleCount = 0;"

Compiler says he cannot initialize class member there, if i omit it 
linker gives me an unresolved symbol?

Can U help me?
