What I'm using it for is to add some large resources to a war. Statistical models, that sort of thing. There is doc on just using the dependency plugin, but that leads to an extra copy if I'm not more confused than usual.

uh? Initially the overlay was added to merge several *war* files. It turned out to be pretty handy to have zip file as well but adding tar.gz is an option as well.
