Requesting Permission To Use Diagram

I am writing a book for O'Reilly. This book is a "cookbook" where each chapter
covers a different open source tool. There is a chapter devoted to Cactus and
we would like to use a diagram contained within the Cactus documentation.
Specifically, we would like to use the diagram I have attached to this post.
The O'Reilly folks will probably redraw the diagram to fit the style of their
books, but the content ends up being the same. I read the license agreement but

was not clear as to whether we could reproduce the diagram without permission.

Thanks,
Brian Coyner

I've seen the ASL included in books (including my Ant book). Core J2EE
Patterns also includes it. I did it just to be on the safe side and
give credit where credit was due, even though the only code we had in
our book was code my co-author and I had written (even though some of it
is in Ant's codebase now too).

I posted this question over to general@ too, since I'm curious what the
right thing to do is.

p.s. I re-drew one of the Cactus diagrams in my book, Java Development
with Ant, p. 313. And the ASL is printed in the back of the book.

RE: Requesting Permission To Use Diagram

Hi Brian,

That's a very good piece of news for Cactus! And thank you for asking
permission to reproduce the diagram. Although I am the one who drew it,
it now belongs to the ASF and I am not sure how it should be addressed.
I am quite confident that you have the right to use it provided you
mention in the text that it is ASL-copyrighted. Erik has posted the
question on general@ so we'll get an answer soon.

Thanks
-Vincent
