a couple more questions about running FOP
a quick followup to my previous posts. with some quick
testing, i've verified the following regarding using FOP
(at least in my situation, it seems to work):
xercesImpl.jar: don't appear to need it, since i'm using
xsltproc to generate the .fo
xml-apis.jar: don't appear to need that either, FOP runs
nicely without it in the classpath
batik.jar: interestingly, even though i'm not doing
anything with SVG, i have to have batik.jar in the
CLASSPATH. what is FOP doing with this if i'm
not using SVG graphics?
in other words, for a pretty simple setup, i appear to need
only
xsltproc (to generate the .fo)
fop.jar
avalon...jar
batik.jar (still now sure why)
and the above is enough to produce my .pdf output,
apparently.
does this sound about right?

You can just look into it and fetch the JavaDoc for the classes
from the Net.
More explicitely: It contains Java interfaces and a few classes
which as a whole constitute an interface called JAXP 1.1 for
working with XML. There are subsets called SAX (1.0 and 2.0), DOM
(some odd mix of version numbers), JAXP 1.0 and TrAX (no version)
which deal with event based parsing, parsing XML into trees and
manipulating them, implementation independent parser creation
and doing XSLT respectively.

i noticed that a while back, so i assumed that that was what was
happening. nice to have it clarified though, thanks. i'll just
make a note to install xerces, just in case other needs come up.

ok, at the risk of sounding dense (but not as dense as i'll sound
later when i try to add extra fonts to my PDF output :-), what
precisely is supplied by the xml-apis.jar file? so the parser
can be crimson or xerces. what exactly does xml-apis.jar add to
this? one writeup i saw described xml-apis.jar as being necessary
only for xalan, but that doesn't seem to make sense.

ok, fair enough. thanks

No, FOP needs an XML-Parser for parsing the .fo
Any JAXP1.1 compliant parser should work (JDK1.4 includes Crimson)
If you look at the output you can see which parser is used
[INFO] Using org.apache.crimson.parser.XMLReaderImpl as SAX2 Parser

See above (SAX/JAXP is needed)

Well it just has been done this way ...
This has already been "fixed" in the redesign.
