Getting an Apache-licensed Piccolo into XMLBeans (RE: xmlbeans line number question)

excellent question -- the answer is not yet, but now seems like a
good time...

Eric is referring to a private email that I sent to Yuval Oren, the
author of Piccolo, which I later forwarded to Eric since he's the
one who had to pull out Piccolo when xmlbeans moved to Apache.
I was waiting to find out more before raising this for discussion
with the other committers, the PPMC, and everyone else on this list.
But, there's no reason why we can't discuss this now.

About a month ago, I was thinking about how I've seen several posts
on this list asking about why the Piccolo isn't part of xmlbeans
since it moved to Apache. Aside from line numbers debugging, it's
also got very good perf, and people seemed to miss it. Of course,
the reason is that Piccolo is licensed under LGPL.

So, I sent an email to Yuval asking if he'd consider relicensing
Piccolo under the new Apache License 2.0. I've gotten one email
back from him that sounds like he would consider doing this. So,
I was going to wait to discuss this until things were a little
more certain, but I'm a pretty optimistic person....so, let's
assume that this works out:

What are the opinions out there about using Piccolo in future
releases of xmlbeans?

Personally, I don't think we should hold up our first release for
it, since we really need to get something out to our users soon,
but I think there's mainly goodness in using it for post-v1.0.1.

Cliff

We here at FedEx chose XmlBeans due to its speed. It is my understanding
that one of the reasons it is so fast is because of Piccolo. I think,
therefore,
that it is pretty safe more me to say that we (at FedEx) would favor the use
of Piccolo.

In fact, one of the reasons I haven't checked out an apache version of
XmlBeans is because it doesn't come with the Piccolo parser. Not only
do we need the speed, we need the line numbers.

Standard disclaimers apply... FedEx doesn't endorse anything I say. ;)

If he provides us with a compatible license for Piccolo, I see now harm
in including a piccolo jar in XMLBeans (not the Piccolo source code
however), making its use configurable, and explaining what its use
might buy you. The Schema interpretation differences are left as a
(sad) exercise for its users, so it seems.

(Sorry BTW for prodding the list and not following up in due time)
