This appears to be a regression bug, was fixed in 2.0.x branch in Bug #37911,
patch supplied there looks to be still valid.

"The logic for deciding if a warning about the certificate CN not matching the
server name is incorrect for the case of wilcard certificates. (It incorrectly
drops into the normal test for a valid wildcard certificate)."

The exact error is: "[warn] RSA server certificate CommonName (CN) `*.viedu.org'
does NOT match server name!?"
The version of httpd is: Apache/2.2.3
The cert is an SSL Server Certificate issued to "*.viedu.org".

What error are you now seeing, for what version of httpd, with what certificate?

The fix for this is was not backported until 2.2.6.
