OK, Paul, your patch is in in a modified form - most part are cosmetics, the
main change I've done is the way the location magic is triggered. Instead of 
resetting the basedir of project, I use FileUtils#resolveFile.

All tests pass on my box, so either the tests haven't been good enough or I
haven't broken anything ;-)

We now just need a patch to docs/manual/CoreTasks/xmlproperty.html.
