pluggable parser?

I did a bit of digging and found that xmlsecurity is slightly coupled to xalan/xerces.  Has anyone tried to use xmlsecurity with other parsers?  Has the ability to plug in other parsers ever come up as a feature request, or in developer discussions?  Would this be a terribly difficult thing to implement?
