I might yet setup the cron job, but I've found that using a spider like httrack , creates a useful copy of the documentation (so long as there are no orphan pages).
I'm still hacking it into the distribution, so the routine is not automated, but there is at least a routine.

I put a static copy of the documentation up at
* http://struts.apache.org/struts-action2/docs/Home.html
but, the image references are not resolving correctly.
The references are to locations like
* /images/icons/emoticons/forbidden.gif
so I coped the appropriate images to
/www/struts.apache.org/images/icons/
and checked to be sure that
images/icons/emoticons/forbidden.gif
existed from /www/struts.apache.org
but, the images are either not being copied to the production server, or there is something happening with the reference that I don't see.
Once we have the export sorted out, we may need to add a frame to provide a left sidebar, as we have on the wiki site.

FWIW, I've found you can export the site manually to HTML. You have to wait about 10 minutes or so, but it comes through. Were you talking about something more routine than that? We should start pushing infra for a space on the Apache Confluence wiki.

Well, I did do a few things to clear some memory on that box, so perhaps that made a difference. Who knew 2.5 gigs could go that quickly :)

Hmmm, a month ago, it wouldn't finish an export even if you let it run for ten hours. We've deleted a numbrer of pages since them, so perhaps we've fallen below some magic ceiling. In any event, it's exporting now, and that's good enough for me! I opened an INFRA ticket for requesting a Confluence instance.

Don, now that we have the autoexport working, would it be possible to add a cron job that zips up the html files at least every day, so that they could be downloaded?
A download would give us a way to integrate a snapshot of the wiki documentation (which is all fo our s2 documentation) into a distribution.

I just setup Pier's autoexport plugin for another site, and it's working just great for me!

It listens for changes, and exports each page as it is saved, so that that static site stays up to date.
If we install this on twdata, we might also need to update the nekohtml jars. It needs 0.9.5, and my Confluence 2.1.2 used 0.8.1. Dunno about 2.1.5a.
On my own project, we have Tomcat running on 80 and HTTPD running on 8080, and we export the spaces to an HTTPD folder.
To get it over to struts.apache.org, we could do something kludgy like

I expect when we get an instance on an ASF machine (INFRA-851), we'll be able to use this to publish the S2 documentation directly, and won't have to go around Robin Hood's barn.
When we do get around to moving the site, I'd like to also visit the issue of renaming the JIRA and Confluence keys to "STRUTS1" and "STRUTS2", to match the repository and package names. It's not trivial, but it is possible. We were using other keys for historical reasons, but I think we've reached the point where we need to be looking forward instead of looking back.

The wiki is now available at http://cwiki.apache.org/confluence and being autoexported to http://cwiki.apache.org/WW/home.html.
The next trick would be to get a cron job (or the autoexport plugin) to ZIP up the website, so that we could just download the current HTML export, and bundle it with a distribution. I suggested adding the feature to autoexport.

This is definately a "Rube Goldberg" solution, but using tools available right now today, we could
* Autoexport Plugin outputs Confluence space to HTML at location on twdata.org
* Cron job on twdata.org creates/refreshes zip archive of exported HTML in a downloadable location
* Build grabs HTML zip archive from twdata.org and freshens local copy of exported website
* Build assembles exported website and Maven output into a uniified website

I just noticed that on infra@ someone just asked about importanting a Confluence space, and Jeff Turner said to make the dump available on people.apache.org, and he would take care of it.
