deploy Tomcat

Hello together!

I've got some errors while deploying my app to Tomcat (5.5 and 6.x). I switched XML Validation and XSD namespacesAware attributes to true and deployed an empty cocoon webapp block. Tomcat is not able to set up the context for that (exception from Tomcat 6.x at the end of this message).

Any idea how to fix this?

Best greetings,
Patrick

Thank you very much! I will do so. I was just wondering, that this happens, because with a cocoon trunk (couple of weeks ago) there was no problem with deployment. Did anything changed within the cocoon-maven-plugin, creating my webApp block?

Patrick

Hello together!

> Well it is confusing:

It still is, but I came a bit closer! I've deployed an empty webapp again and my tomcat-logfile states, that org.springframework.web.context.ContextLoaderListener could not be found (NoSuchClassException). That is perfectly ok for empty webapp, since there is no spring-dependency inside WEB-INF/lib. Then I try to deploy my 'real' application and there are all needed libs inside WEB-INF/lib, but the ContextLoaderListener could still not be found! (One more thing: I am using the spring-jars of version 2.0.6, maybe this is a problem, I don't know).

Am I missing something? Besides: with mvn jetty:run everything is well.

Re: deploy Tomcat

Well it is confusing:

After modifications relating to xerces, there is still no chance to get my cocoon based webapp running inside tomcat!
ARE there any changes with mavens webapp archetype? A couple of days ago (before updating to latest trunk) everything worked fine for me.

I always recieve FATAL error: Error listenerStart

Any hints?

I have no idea, since other apps are running fine (e.g. spring-security-samples-contact out of spring-security trunk from yesterday).

This does not work for me, I repeated to set JAVA_ENDORSED_DIRS (made mistake before, calling this var JAVA_ENDORSED_LIBS!) in several java specific env configs (inside my linux /etc/env.d/java dir), but this doesent work. Maybe it is a problem, that I am running tomcat 6.0 with jdk 1.5? After setting the mentioned env-var, I tried to start tomcat with 'catalina.sh run', since I know that this var is used inside that script, nothing but exceptions.

So solutions for 6.0-users are somewhat welcome, I guess ;)

Perfectly well! I've just tried this for tomcat-5.5 (xercesImpl-2.8.1.jar).
But with 6.0 there are problems!

1) if one follows http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/standards/index.html and put xerces-...jar into $JAVA_HOME/lib/endorsed, errors keep alive! (No idea why JDK endorsed standard is not working)

2) if one try to bypass that and create endorsed inside $CATALINA_HOME, there are two options (wich I have not tested, since I want to go on with 5.5 <-- unless somebody gives reason why it should be 6.0 :)

2a) create a deamon startup-skrip (in case one wants tomcat as deamon) and overwrite java.endorsed.dirs=$CATALINA_HOME/foo/bar/endorsed ( foo/bar represents some location where endorsed libs should be placed, I guess common location would be $CATALINA_HOME/lib/endorsed )

2b) for manual startup catalina.sh or .bat skript should be modified to reflect -Djava.endorsed.dirs=$FOO/bar

But as mentioned before: I would prefer to put such endorsed libs inside jdk-default location. Does anyone know, if setting $JAVA_ENDORSED_LIBS explicit would solve (idea during writing :) or is that overwritten during JDK startup? <-- ill try this immediately

Re: deploy Tomcat

Hello together!

I am still within this 'mess'. What information should I provide to get some help? (Still try to deploy cocoon-base app inside tomcat 5.5, still there is FATAL: Error listernerStart and still I have no idea what is going on, because other apps, wich rely on org.springframework.web.context.ContextLoaderListener work smoothly!)

Appreciative for any advice,
Patrick.

Well following the tomcat documentation:

http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-6.0-doc/class-loader-howto.html

it says you will can provide your own xerces implementation.

Since it's tomcat that will do the validation, I guess you will have to
add it to the endorsed dir of your tomcat installation.

Let me know if that works out for you.

Jeroen

Actually I have no idea. I am using standard cocoon generated web.xml
<web-app version="2.4"

My stacktrace shows the usage of com.sun.org.apache.xerces, so I would guess it's suns ;) Also I am sure to not provide my own xeres version. DYT, that I should put explicit dependency inside my webApp-blocks pom.xml to solve this?

Re: deploy Tomcat

Hi Patrick,

Do you have any idea, which XML Schema is causing this error?
While looking at the tomcat server.xml did you also notice this
statement:

Note: XML Schema validation will not work with Xerces 2.2.

Did you provide your own version of xerces? Because the one that comes
with the JDK might not work.

Jeroen

> I've got some errors while deploying my app to Tomcat (5.5 and 6.x). I switched XML Validation and XSD namespacesAware attributes to true and deployed an empty cocoon webapp block. Tomcat is not able to set up the context for that (exception from Tomcat 6.x at the end of this message).
