Want a Mentor

I would like to join apache mentorship programme and want to contribute to
Apache Hadoop project.

I have Java skills required for the project.

I'm unable to figure out how to contribute. Please assist.

Thanks,
Kapil

I'd suggest to look at
https://projects.apache.org/projects.html?language (possibly the Java
related projects list, or by ?category as you wish).
I find it quite good at presenting each project with a description
(short but indicative) and all needed links.

Regards,
Yann.

Well, it would be a full-time job for _every_ project to go and list the help
they need. We have what - "just" a couple hundreds of the projects? Or and
there's "How to Contribute" page on virtually all of them. If you aren't
sure what project you want to join or how to contribute to one you already
know about - there's also Google search. Let me help you here

    https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+contribute+to+apache+hadoop&oq=how+to+contribute+to+apache+hadoop&aqs=chrome.0.0j69i57.4457j0j7&client=ubuntu-browser&sourceid=chrome&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8

There, the top link is what you need. Enjoy!

You can try to search JIRA for interesting tasks
here is the example query of all currently opened GSOC tasks:

Hi,

Definitely I agree with Jain. I'm a newcomer also. Up to this moment I
was silently crawling Apache project searching for a project I could
take a part of.
Only added value is that I found many interesting Apache projects that
I'll use at work, but still don't know how to (in practice) contribute
to one.

No problem Patricia. Yes, it would be very helpful if Apache can have a
help wanted page, with needs and required skills and may be complexity of
theissue. It will be very helpful for any newcomer. I have spent 1-2 hrs
today going thru almost all incubate projects, still no luck with finding a
way to start/ take a first step.

I'm sorry - I thought you had already selected Hadoop. I don't know any
alternative to picking projects, browsing their developer lists, and
seeing if anything interests you.

Maybe Apache needs a "Help wanted" web page where projects can list
their needs?

I'm looking for a suitable project for me I can start understanding it and
then contributing to it.

Hi Bikramjeet,
I allowed your message to go through to the Pivot Developer's
list. And thank you. We would like to help you take this proposal into
Pivot, and can definitely help with the technical aspects of that.
But, first, can you take a look at the website:
http://pivot.apache.org, and then sign up on the developer's list by
following the instructions here: http://pivot.apache.org/lists.html

Thank you,
~Roger Whitcomb

Re: Pivot - Airavata GSOC Project

Posted by Bikramjeet Singh <si...@gmail.com>.
Hi sir,
I was travelling and was not able to make required changes in the proposal,
I will make the desired changes in few hours and submit it.
And here's the link of the previous version only
https://docs.google.com/document/d/10y0zFdnbf-fgbJgLvwedkNfP7y7TM0H8pnMWv9j2tQw/mobilebasic
If it is required to make it Pivot specific, I would really like help in
technical things of Pivot.

Thanks

Re: Pivot - Airavata GSOC Project

Posted by Bikramjeet Singh <si...@gmail.com>.
Hi sir,
I was travelling and was not able to make required changes in the proposal,
I will make the desired changes in few hours and submit it.
And here's the link of the previous version only
https://docs.google.com/document/d/10y0zFdnbf-fgbJgLvwedkNfP7y7TM0H8pnMWv9j2tQw/mobilebasic
If it is required to make it Pivot specific, I would really like help in
technical things of Pivot.

Thanks

Re: Pivot - Airavata GSOC Project

Hi Suresh,
Thanks for answering. I'd love to mentor someone on such a project. So, I guess that means I need to make a project proposal, etc. So, let me set that in motion, or how do we coordinate that between the two projects?

Thanks,
~Roger

Hi Roger,

I am so sorry I started a response to your thread below but it remained in peace in my drafts folder. I think its timely to resurrect this thread.

I only have superficial understanding of Swing Vs JavaFX vs Pivot. But we are all for dogfooding indeed Airavata builds on atleast a dozen of other fellow projects. Can we create a GSoC project and mentor a student to do this evaluation and converge on any solution? Will there be any volunteers from Pivot to mentor such a project?

Thanks,
Suresh

Re: Want a Mentor

For students with JavaFX experience, in Apache Airavata projects we intend to have some GSOC projects on this topics. It will involve porting existing Java Swing based application to JavaFX. Hop by the dev list (dev@airavata.apache.org <ma...@airavata.apache.org>). Ofcourse you want to subscribe first to make sure you get replies.

Welcome.

Please see details of the process at http://community.apache.org/mentoringprogramme.html

It should be noted that 95% of the work is on your side. Success in open source is about self motivation and self management. The other 5% is about asking for help when you hit a barrier. The above link should provide enough info to get you started.
