How to determine Cocoon memory usage?

Hello users,

  When I view samples/statuspage I see:
  total: 253.19MB
so it seems to be correct, but "top" command memory statistics are
saying something diffrent: 362m. The first value is constat, but
362m after few hours changed to 384m. How to explain it?

I have JVM 1.5.0, Tomcat 5.5.4 and Cocoon 2.1.6 running on Slacware
  10.

  JAVA_OPTS="-server -Xmx256m -Xms512m"

  cocoon.xconf:
  store-janitor/@freememory=10000000
  store-janitor/@heapsize=2450000000
  store-janitor/@cleanupthreadinterval=10
  store-janitor/@adaptivethreadinterval=true
  store-janitor/@threadpriority=5
  store-janitor/@precent_to_free=10
  store-janitor/@invokegc=true

  store/@maxobject=3000
  store/@use-cache-directory=true

  transient-store/@maxobject=3000
  transient-store/@use-persistent-cache=false
