You are using the worker MPM rather than prefork?  I'd suggest you try prefork
instead in the first place.

To help diagnose further, please try to obtain a core dump and back trace from
2.0.54.  Add "CoreDumpDirectory /tmp" to the httpd.conf, then start the server
using:

# ulimit -n unlimited
# apachectl start

when the bug is triggerred, a /tmp/core.* file should appear; run:

# gdb /path/to/httpd /tmp/core.<pid>
...
(gdb) threads all apply bt full

and attach the complete output of the gdb command to this bug report.
