updated but not groups, which prevents me to perform any action (even
checkout) on the avalon repository.

That's precisely the problem : brian updated the CVS "avail" (I'm listed
in it), but forgot to add me to the "avalon" group.
bash-2.04$ id sylvain
uid=1318(sylvain) gid=1318(sylvain) groups=1318(sylvain), 5000(apcvs),
5001(xml), 5024(cocoon)
bash-2.04$ id leosimons
uid=1291(leosimons) gid=1291(leosimons) groups=1291(leosimons),
