cvs commit: jakarta-tomcat build.xml README

stefano 99/10/12 15:43:08

  Modified: . build.xml README
  Log:
  - Updated the README
  - changed the "../build" to "./build" since it makes little sense to go back one directory

These should not brake anything, but I'm not sure. We can go back if this is the case.

No prob, people. Sorry about that :(

that said harish has some concerns on the contrary.
hopefully he'll chime in. those who put this item
on the table (?costin?) should probably restate the
motivation behind this move.

that said, i'd like to give "../build" a shot.

Yep, me too -- I like ../build. We wanted to change things so that the Apache build can be
"dumped" into. Like gonzo sez, we used to have it that way before until we talked about it and
thought ../build was a better idea for integration with Apache.

there was some thought into the build targets
as they would pop up at the directory above
the workspace ... so as to avoid build and
source overlays. that and the type of build
(ie main, dist, test) at times depends upon
other resources available one directory up
	(eg jakarta-tools).

we might want to consider rolling back to
the notion of "../build" ... having done
it the other way from day one i'm pretty
keen on going with the "../build" approach.

	hope this helps,

We changed from ./build to ../build recently, to have all the binaries in a different directory.
It is very easy to customize the target directory in command-line, I'll make the changes soon
( I'm still working on the build scripts for tomcat+apache )

Prior to this change, the directory hierarchy looked like this:

    build/
        build/tomcat/
            <<TOMCAT project build stuff>>

    jakarta-tomcat/
        <<TOMCAT source tree>>

and after this change, it looks like this:

    jakarta-tomcat/
        <<TOMCAT source tree ...>>
        build/
            tomcat/
                <<TOMCAT project build stuff>>

It seems to me that, if we want this change, two additional things should happen:

* Make the same change in each of the other projects,
which probably do the same thing (I don't have the CVS
tree in front of me to check).

* Change "./build/tomcat/*" to "./build/*" everywhere
to eliminate the redundant "tomcat" subdirectory
  underneath "build".

On the other hand, I can see value in having the "build" hierarchy as it originally was -- the least
of the benefits is that a "cvs commit" or "cvs update" at the jakarta-tomcat level does not have to
waste time scanning the build directory. I would actually prefer the original approach for that
reason.
