I have a similar problem:
svn up often gives the following message:
Fetching external item into 'src/webapp/lenya/resources/bxe'
svn: Working copy 'src/webapp/lenya/resources/bxe/plugins' not locked
It may be related to the following bug [1] in svn:
"fix 'not locked' error message when updating an externals entry with
multiple directories"
This bug was fixed in svn 1.1, which was released in september 2004.
I'm using svn 1.0.6, so I probably should update.
Does anybody have the same problem, or any experience with a newer
version of svn?

Thanks a lot for the info.
Do you know if I can keep my existing workspace if I update to svn 1.1?
(I'm just using svn on the cmd line.)
Or is it necessary to do a fresh checkout of everything?

anything other than 1.1 is a gamble imo. 1.1 fixed a LOT of bugs.
subclipse is based on 1.1, with good results, and i also use 1.1 on the
cmd line

version 1.1.4 (r13838) and seems to work fine so far.
