Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: srch\nutch\nu

I have been installing Nutch 0.8 on a Windows XP-SP2 platform with java
jdk1.5. I tried with Cygwin, I tried with Ben Ogle's python script: the
results were the same. The demo crawl command generated the same java
exception:

bash-3.1$ bin/nutch crawl urls -dir crawls -depth 3 -topN 50
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
srch\nutch\nutch-08\logs

I tried to create an empty logs file or directory, that did not resolve the
problem. Apparently the tutorial on installing Nutch version 0.8 is
inaccurate or insufficient.

What could I do?

Thanks for help!
yo keller

I had the same exact problem and discovered the source of the Exceptions. I
now have Nutch crawling on Windows. The problem is with cygwin and Windows
path names that contain spaces (or possibly even other characters). Since
I couldn?t figure out how to make cygwin paths behave, I copied my Nutch out
of ?Program Files? to ?c:\nutch-0.8? and now everything runs as expected.
