Best Cross Platform Mobile App

So I showed the app that you all have been helping me to optimize to many
people and they think we need to bring it to the masses on mobile devices.
My app has to heavily process data that could take forever to process on a
mobile device and display it in tabular form. This would be inefficient.
So the plan is to do all of the heavy processing on a mainframe every night
at 3am. Then, a mobile user would only need to download the data when the
app opens instead of processing it on the device, and they could sort and
filter the data using the application as they see fit. This would make it
much more responsive.

I will be the first to admit that I am not a very good programmer. I do not
have the skills or time to write an app in different languages for each
device and to maintain them. I need a platform that I can write once and it
will work on iOS and Android on both phones and tablets. The only
prerequisites that I have is that I can skin buttons for a customized look,
plays nicely with arrays, and is very good at displaying webcontent such as
pages or Google Maps.

My first thought was Adobe AIR, because I am already familiar with that
language so the learning curve for doing a mobile app would be low. But
this is an app that would have a life of at least 5-10 years, and I am just
sooo uneasy about Adobe's commitment to AIR in the long term. We may try to
sell this to a bigger company for their clients and investors to use and I
don't know if they would have a lot of confidence in Adobe Air either. I
just absolutely love the platform though.

I have done a little searching and options like PhoneGap seem to be getting
a lot of attention. So for all of you mobile developers, which is the
best/easiest/reliable cross platform program to develop an app for? Thanks
for your thoughts!

I think that is going to be the plan. If I can make enough money from the
first round of selling this thing, then if Adobe stops supporting Flex/AIR,
I'll just hire one of you genius' to write me a new program :)

AIR it is!!!

Even if it can, there are other factors to consider, like learning curve
and re-use of code. If the subset of your app you want to run on mobile
isn't expected to have performance issues, you'll probably get it done a
lot faster if you can re-use a significant amount of your code.

I find all of these Javascript/HTML5 solutions fascinating, as well as React
Native. I just don't know enough about them at this point to know if I can
trust them to be robust enough to do everything that I need currently. So
after further examination, I am going to need services and thus a php
interface, database access over the internet, sqlite, I want to be able to
skin all my components so that I can brand easily, i need to be able to
display and interface with Google Maps, and display and interact with
photos/video. Can these Javascript/HTML5 solutions do all of these things?

It's incomplete… management chose react native after the initial draft.

Why even bother considering an app for displaying and sorting a table?
Plain HTML / Javascript would just do the work for that, it is cross
platform, and it looks like will last for a few years :)

Re: Best Cross Platform Mobile App

Hi,

Air is surely a first class candidat when it comes to choose a
crossplatform development tool.
Regarding the futur, it's hard to have certitudes in the long term, even
if the AIR team is very active and if Adobe repeats that it will
continue to support the AIR runtime.
But an important fact is that the AppStore and the PlayStore contains a
huge amount of apps developped with AIR and it seems quite unlikely that
AIR suddenly disappears.

Technically, AIR is mature and doesn't lack any key feature : you can
create very complexes applications with the ease given by the as3
language strength and like with flash, you don't have to worry about
rendering differences between platforms.
But event if you are familiar with the language, don't minimize the
amount of work you will have to do if you want to create applications
with flex undistinguishable from native ones : it's absolutely possible
but you will have to follow good coding practices to get the required
level of performance.
