[jira] [Created] (CASSANDRA-11813) Bad first start leaves node in invalid state.

Jeremiah Jordan created CASSANDRA-11813:
-------------------------------------------

             Summary: Bad first start leaves node in invalid state.
                 Key: CASSANDRA-11813
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-11813
             Project: Cassandra
          Issue Type: Bug
            Reporter: Jeremiah Jordan
            Priority: Minor
             Fix For: 3.0.x, 3.x

If bootstrap startup fails with "Unable to gossip with any seeds"

{code}
ERROR [main] 2016-05-16 20:58:34,747 CassandraDaemon.java:692 - Exception encountered during startup
java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to gossip with any seeds
	at org.apache.cassandra.gms.Gossiper.doShadowRound(Gossiper.java:1354) ~[main/:na]
	at org.apache.cassandra.service.StorageService.checkForEndpointCollision(StorageService.java:563) ~[main/:na]
	at org.apache.cassandra.service.StorageService.prepareToJoin(StorageService.java:822) ~[main/:na]
	at org.apache.cassandra.service.StorageService.initServer(StorageService.java:740) ~[main/:na]
	at org.apache.cassandra.service.StorageService.initServer(StorageService.java:620) ~[main/:na]
	at org.apache.cassandra.service.CassandraDaemon.setup(CassandraDaemon.java:333) [main/:na]
	at org.apache.cassandra.service.CassandraDaemon.activate(CassandraDaemon.java:551) [main/:na]
	at org.apache.cassandra.service.CassandraDaemon.main(CassandraDaemon.java:679) [main/:na]
{code}

If you start the node again once the seed is up it will fail with a "Found system keyspace files, but they couldn't be loaded!" exception.

{code}
ERROR [main] 2016-05-16 20:59:17,285 CassandraDaemon.java:692 - Fatal exception during initialization
org.apache.cassandra.exceptions.ConfigurationException: Found system keyspace files, but they couldn't be loaded!
	at org.apache.cassandra.db.SystemKeyspace.checkHealth(SystemKeyspace.java:906) ~[main/:na]
	at org.apache.cassandra.service.StartupChecks$8.execute(StartupChecks.java:304) ~[main/:na]
	at org.apache.cassandra.service.StartupChecks.verify(StartupChecks.java:107) ~[main/:na]
	at org.apache.cassandra.service.CassandraDaemon.setup(CassandraDaemon.java:169) [main/:na]
	at org.apache.cassandra.service.CassandraDaemon.activate(CassandraDaemon.java:551) [main/:na]
	at org.apache.cassandra.service.CassandraDaemon.main(CassandraDaemon.java:679) [main/:na]
{code}

You have to completely wipe everything to try again. Its not the end of the world, but it is different than in Cassandra 2.1 where you could just start the node again to retry the bootstrap.
