[Issue 126699] New: After operating system crash OpenOffice custom options/settings are lost. Must manually reinstate

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126699

          Issue ID: 126699
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: After operating system crash OpenOffice custom
options/settings are lost. Must manually reinstate
           Product: General
           Version: 4.1.1
          Hardware: PC
                OS: Windows 7
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: Normal
          Priority: P5 (lowest)
         Component: ui
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: absaluk@yahoo.com

My Windows7 tends to freeze/crash frequently. After each crash, OpenOffice
behaves as if I had just installed the program. It prompts me to register, and
all my custom Tools/Options and other settings are gone. I must laboriously
reinstate those settings by hand after each crash. I've been unable to locate
any central configuration file(s) to save once my settings are put in so that
post-crash I can just copy that file(those files) back over to reinstate my
settings. What can I do?

You are welcome. It is useful that you provided a bugzilla report. And thank
you for the follow-up account.

You are correct. The profile material becomes corrupted/lost often enough that
it would be helpful to be able to easily backup, restore, and reset it.

OpenOffice stores custom settings in its profile:

Not a AOO bug but bound to your Windows operating system.

There are two questions here, one about a possible defect.

 1. Why does crashing impact the profile? (And what is the registration
business.) That is a technical and usability issue. It would be good to find
out what it is. It would also be good to have more details. Especially since
this is very different than the case where users become stuck in auto-recover
loops that they can't get out of without resetting their profile.
It is agreed that AOO is not responsible for the frequent crashing of the
user's configuration. Likewise not responsible for the quality of the power to
the PC, for example. Yet it does need to be understood why AOO is not
resilient in the face of such situations.

 2. The user asked how to back up the profile in a manner that would allow it
to be recovered in the event that (1) occurs. That is an useful matter to
address as well.

QUESTIONS FOR @absaluk:

 a. I assume these dangerous crashes happen while Apache OpenOffice is open.
Yes? You do not mention any problems with lost work or lost documents, just
the lost profile. Is that accurate?

 b. When you set your options, do you have backup files made and/or use
auto-recovery?

 c. Do you have QuickStarter running (under Options - OpenOffice - Memory)?

BACKING UP THE PROFILE

 d. There is information on finding and backing up the profile on the Community
Forum, <https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/> .

The general procedure is as follows. Have QuickStarter off. (If it is on,
turn it off in Tools/Options, close OpenOffice, and restart your system.) On
the C: drive, find the Users folder. Have "File name extensions" and "Hidden
items" enabled in your Windows Explorer view. In the Users folder, open the
folder for your user account. Navigate through the (hidden but showing)
"AppData" folder. Navigate through Roaming\OpenOffice\4\. If there is a .lock
file there, delete it. The AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user\ folder is what
you want to back up. It can be 50MB or more. I recommend putting a date on
the backup and not letting one get too old.

EXTRA CREDIT

The next time that you restart after a crash, without opening OpenOffice, go
look into you user account information for its AppData\Roaming\OpenOfice\4\ and
see what there is, including any user folder. Is there a .lock file? Back up
any user folder before you start OpenOffice. Let us know what you found.

Thanks for help. The issue for me was not data loss. It was loss of custom
settings on OS freeze/crash. And that occurred when an OpenOffice document was
open at the time of the crash. I just now read the tutorial on backing up the
User Profile and that’s all I need to solve that problem.

(In investigating this matter I had searched the forum under “settings”
“configuration” “options” “custom” -- all of which generated huge lists of
forum topics -- but not under “profile”. And so I never made it to the User
Profile tutorial.)

Note that I actually had at one point found the user profile folder. But I
didn’t know that I had to exit OpenOffice completely for custom profile
settings changes to show in those files. In testing to see whether there is
where custom settings are kept, when I made options changes and looked for user
profile folder updates, there weren’t any, since I hadn’t exited completely
before checking. (The only file that updated prior to exit was “standard.soc”,
the colors pallette.) So I (wrongly) concluded that that wasn’t where the
settings were kept.

I reported this issue to bugzilla because (1) I (mistakenly) thought custom
settings weren’t located in a single convenient place, and should be (although
admittedly, that’s not really a ‘bug’). And (2) because I felt custom settings
shouldn’t be lost on an OS crash.

It would be nice if OpenOffice had a feature wherein various Profile settings
could be saved by the user in single backup files, then imported back in when
desired, as can be done in certain other software apps.

Thanks again for help and sorry for confusion.
