Initializing struts
I need to initialize my web application when struts (Tomcat) starts up.
Is there an means for calling an init method on a class only when
struts/app server starts up?

In your web.xml, you can use the load-on-startup tag. Eg:
<servlet>
<servlet-name>init</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>com.blah.InitServlet</servlet-class>
<load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>
</servlet>
This will call the init method on your servlet when tomcat starts up.
