as dtardon mentioned,
auto increment should be applicable not just to numbers , but strings as well.

One change, here,

enter a1, a2, into cells,
drag it down..
Edit->Fill->Series..., selecting type Linear and setting Start value to a1,
End value to "*" and increment to 1.

Here  * is specified as end value, it generates numbers till the last row user
drags.
