Cell value encoding

Hello, dear all, I am having some problems dealding with
Japanese Characters. I set up a cell value as this:
cell.setCellValue("some Japanese characters go here");

And I end up with wrong values in the generated XLS file.

Then I looked up the POI API and souce code, and did the follow:

cell.setEncoding((short)1);//Using UTF_16
cell.setCellValue("some Japanese characters go here");

Then it worked fine. But I am not sure if this is the
right thing to do. Doesn't the POI/Excel supports something
like setting up the encoding using Shift_JS, ISO-8859-1
these stuff? Or I only have a choice between
ENCODING_COMPRESSED_UNICODE and or ENCODING_UTF_16?
And the thing I did was just right?

Any hint will be highly appreciated.

Yup that¹s why as a poi committer, I tried to recruit someone who knows what
these issues are then pointed him to the tool we use, encouraged him to go
look at it and even introduced him to the most qualified person I know on
the tool.  (Pretty good plan if I do say so myself!)  It is not possible to
be an expert in all of the tools that we use.  Instead you rely on others.
You'll learn this quite soon at your present rate.

Just remember, the brightest flame burns the quickest.

It's rather related to FOP project, it seems. (Of course,
related to the Forrest)

The motivation of raising the "ALL DOCUMENTS TO UTF-8" to poi-dev
the other day was due to this issue, to be honest.
If I replace the fonts to the japanese ones, they can not deal with
"iso-8859-1" special characters properly (it will be garbled).
Anyway, "ALL DOCUMENTS TO UTF-8" proposal had been rejected and
I think it's okay.

Well, I am not sure whether there are ASL like chinese fonts,
korean fonts etc... This can be discussed at FOP and Forrest, too.
(If we think about the i18n/m17n of the ASF more seriously)

I know that if we (poi team) can solve this problem, it also
means the prosperity of the Forrest Team (^_^)v

The first I'm aware of ;-).  I actually think it would be best to write them
in xdoc and solve the build problem with the forrest/fop folks.  Otherwise
we end up not fixing the problem and furthermore we end up possibly having
to reformat an HTML document that we can't read into XML.  If it is in XML,
worst case I transform it to HTML with a simple stylesheet.  The other
direction doesn't work so well ;-)

When I use JobEntry(second,minute,hour,weekday,dom,task) parameter
weekday must be filled with int 1-7. Is 1 = monday or Sunday?

The reason I switched to postgres was because of the problems I was having
with MySql on JBoss, then had a load of problems getting postgres working on
this platform. Nightmares. There are known issues with cygwin and postgresql
on windows XP home but these are resolved on this machine.

weekday must be filled with int 1-7. Is 1 = monday or Sunday?

It fails because none of the jars get copied into into the   ..\webapps\newapp\WEB-INF\lib on the first of the ant builds. You  will probably find that it is empty.
Note there is a \tdk\lib folder under the TDK_HOME full of jars.. I just copied the lot into the ..\WEB-INF\lib and ant init then runs fine.
I am wondering if the TDK has been 'mavenised' in some way but this does not seem quite right because there are no project.xml files. 
As you may know, a Maven build would normally obtain all the jars it needs from a central repository as it needs them at buildtime (pretty neat).
If this is a/the solution then a note to that effect might have been expected in a ReadME. As it stands, the distribution build is 'broken' according to the instructions as given. Have a try with that and see how it goes.

If there are any sites needing CJK fonts, I can modify the Forrestbot's

Thanks Nicola,

This will be (I think) related to the internationalization/
multilingualization of the whole ASF projects (websites),
if we think about the i18n/m17n of the ASF more seriously.

Well, I am not sure whether there are ASL like chinese fonts,
korean fonts etc... This can be discussed at FOP and Forrest, too.

I know that if we (poi team) can solve this problem, it also
means the prosperity of the Forrest Team (^_^)v

how to use it, the character encoding issue, etc that would be awesome.  An
article or how to, or something like that.  We'll publish it here and give
you accords. 

If you want to do it as part of the site, just do it in the "xdoc" format
that all the existing docuemntation is in.  Its basically XML.  See here:

You did the right thing.  The UTF_16 is a misnomer carried from the earliest
versions of POI.  In 3.0 these will be renamed to "EIGHT_BIT_CSET and
SIXTEEN_BIT_CSET" or something.  The first case is useful only for US
character sets.  The only problem is how to name this concisely and clearly
(because there are some eight bit character sets that excel writes in 2
bytes because Excel is a silly format).
