   Does this happen consistently? Or does the system recover? The design is that if a memcached goes unhealthy, the system may give up optimizing but it shouldn't get slow.  However, it might take a few failed queries for mod_pagespeed to notice that memcached is unhealthy.
   
   Can you try visiting your page with ?PageSpeedFilters=+debug? That will respond with HTML annotated with comments with some timing information that might be useful.
