How to handle Passwordcolumns

HY List

i will write an application handling Users with Username and Passwords 
in an MySQL Database. MY Problem is, how can i handle Columns with 
MySQL-Password functions??

The passwordcolumn is an normal VARCHAR field, but how to set an password??

i will only set the Password.
