Whats your preferred chat channel for Apache Geode?

Contributors,
We're looking into starting a chat channel, mostly for in-the moment chat
during events. Questions and important items should still continue to be
discussed in mail groups, or posted to JIRA.

Some Apache projects use IRC. Others use HipChat. More recently Slack is
becoming popular.

We started this HipChat room:
https://apachegeode.hipchat.com/chat/room/1584658

Does the community have a different preference?

I can share my experience with Apache Bigtop. At first we simply started
a #bigtop channel on Freenode and that was good. With time, a younger
hipper ones of us migrated to Hipchat. Both are ok (Geode's Hipchat is
still in a weird state -- but it'll be a matter of time to resolve
that) the biggest
learning from the Bigtop experience is that whatever you do -- don't have
both. Stick with one.

Thanks,
Roman.

Hmm, maybe it has something to do with the number of "configured" users
allowed to access the room, like "unlimited" or something. Anything more
than 5 users requires you to pay.

Thanks to the awesome ASF INFRA our Hipchat room

hassle: http://s.apache.org/geodechat

I've also added the link to this wiki page tracking all
the different ways folks can get in touch with us:

I haven't seen it used much around ASF. In fact, the only reason
I personally would even consider Hipchat is because ASF INFRA
started to use it and it seemed OK. Personally, I'm an IRC kind
of a guy. If for nothing else but to make sure that no corporation

We're definitely missing something and I'm still trying to figure out
what it is. The correct way to setup Hipchat is the way it is done
for ASF INFRA: https://www.hipchat.com/g7itl962x

This doesn't require logins, etc. Ours seems to be behind the
registration wall (the "misconfiguration" you're seeing is because
you haven't been invited and registered).

I'll find out what are we missing and will report back in a day or two.

Thanks,
Roman.

Re: Whats your preferred chat channel for Apache Geode?

Posted by John Blum <jb...@pivotal.io>.
I am not sure what is up with the HipChat room ("apachegeode") you started
for Geode, but it either does not exist, or the configuration of it is
wrong. The link (https://apachegeode.hipchat.com/chat/room/1584658) does
not lead to a valid room.

Even the existing "GemFire" room seems mis-configured...

"you've reached the end of your 'viewable chat history'. Switch to HipChat
Plus for unlimited access". What?!

Why should anyone in the community have to upgrade and pay money to view
the chat history?

Not sure if anyone else is having this problem or is already running
"HipChat Plus", but the "apachegeode" room does not seem to be accessible
to everyone. Even a search for "apachegeode" returns 0 results.

What am I missing?
