[I] c/sedona-gdal: [sedona-db]

paleolimbot opened a new issue, #870:
URL: https://github.com/apache/sedona-db/issues/870

   In https://github.com/apache/sedona-db/pull/858 there's a CI failure that seems unrelated to the changes there

   https://github.com/apache/sedona-db/actions/runs/26306734414/job/77445334416?pr=858#step:14:1548

   ```
   test mem::tests::test_mem_builder_mixed_band_types ... ok
   test mem::tests::test_mem_builder_mixed_owned_and_external_bands ... ok
   test mem::tests::test_mem_builder_multi_band ... ok
   test mem::tests::test_mem_builder_single_band ... ok
   test mem::tests::test_mem_builder_with_epsg_code_projection ... ok
   test mem::tests::test_mem_builder_with_geo_transform ... ok
   test mem::tests::test_mem_builder_with_nodata ... ok
   test mem::tests::test_mem_builder_with_owned_bands ... ok
   test dataset::tests::test_set_projection_roundtrip ... ok
   test mem::tests::test_mem_builder_zero_bands ... ok
   double free or corruption (fasttop)
   error: test failed, to rerun pass `-p sedona-gdal --lib`
   Caused by:
     process didn't exit successfully: `/home/runner/work/sedona-db/sedona-db/target/debug/deps/sedona_gdal-b63a0a6bdec3d927` (signal: 6, SIGABRT: process abort signal)
   ```

   I'm not sure if this is transient or not but I wanted to log it in case it doesn't pop up again.

   Looks like all crashes happen when calling `GDALClose` on GPKG-backed GDAL datasets. I tried to serialize all tests involving GPKG datasets and the problem has gone.

   I found that there's already a GDAL ticket describing the same problem https://github.com/OSGeo/gdal/issues/10685 and there's a fix https://github.com/OSGeo/gdal/pull/10687 . The minimum released GDAL version with the fix is 3.9.3. Our GitHub runner's GDAL version 3.8.4 definitely missed it, that's why we hit this problem.

   Thank you for tracking that down! We could possibly also just use `.fgb` instead of `.gpkg` for those tests.

   @james-willis @Kontinuation this appears to keep happening. I first noticed after one of James' PRs merged but I have a feeling we've just merged more PRs since then so I've been noticing more frequently. This is ephemeral, so possibly due to uninitialized memory or threading.
