reading error pages

I installed cocoon (and tomcat) according to the directions, and when I check the http://127.0.0.1/cocoon/ I get a 500 internal server error and more than a screenful of java error message. In the middle of it all I see:

root cause

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/cocoon/components/source/URLSource
	void org.apache.cocoon.Cocoon.contextualize(org.apache.avalon.framework.context.Context
[and so on]

How do I begin to interpret what I've got wrong?
Thanks,
Mike Aracic
