I recently upgraded:

Red Hat Linux 9 (kernel 2.4.20-19.9)
Sun J2SDK 1.4.2
Cocoon 2.1 CVS (3-August-2003)

and the problem is still there. You must set autoDeploy="false" to allow normal
shutdown.
