SMTP forwarding

The time it takes to forward a message received via SMTP seems too long.

My MUA connects to James via SMTP and passes in a message for remote delivery.
That mail sits in the spool for a brutally long time before getting relayed to
the outside world.

Suggestions?

This is James 1.2.1, (according to the README).
Repository type is whatever the default is in the conf file -- most likely file.
