   re-reading this, perhaps it is the auth cache instead (or in addition to).
   
   (noting that couchdb 4.x will not change this behaviour, when Jan first mentioned 4.x we were replacing the clustered code with FoundationDB. That project was abandoned since and will not know be happening).
