[Bug 64885] New: Do we need specify that ChrootDir must be a valid directory?

https://bz.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=64885

            Bug ID: 64885
Summary: Do we need specify that ChrootDir must be a valid
                    directory?
           Product: Apache httpd-2
           Version: 2.4.43
          Hardware: PC
                OS: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: major
          Priority: P2
         Component: Documentation
          Assignee: docs@httpd.apache.org
          Reporter: zhoushulin1992@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

"ChrootDir"(http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/mod/mod_unixd.html#chrootdir)
operate on the new root directory, do we need specify that this new root
directory must be a valid directory since the 'chroot' operation will fail if
it is not a valid directory?

--- Comment #1 from Rich Bowen <rb...@apache.org> ---
I could probably be persuaded otherwise, but I feel like the phrase "Please
make sure you are properly familiar with the operation of chroot before
attempting to use this feature" covers this point, as well as numerous others
that we could not hope to cover in a single directive synopsis. Possibly we
could add an encouragement to consult `man chroot` on one's chosen OS, to cover
this and all other aspects of chroot.

Elsewhere in this same doc we use the phrase "unless you know exactly what you
are doing, and what the dangers are", which could potentially come across as
condescending, but serves a similar purpose.
