Subscribing is via: announce-subscribe@subversion.apache.org (woulda
been nice to include instructions in your email)
To *post* to announce@s.a.o, you (apparently) need to use your
@apache.org address, so it was immediately refusing his attempt to
subscribe.

This requirement is unique to the announce@ list (at least, across the
Subversion mailing list set).

Is this applicable to other mailing lists? i.e. If you are not
subscribed, you need to post with your @apache.org address otherwise
it's revoked? Or is this only because announmce@s.a.o is
a read-only mailing list (for regular users)? (ditto with
svn@s.a.o?)
