   A little web research suggests that most GCC compilers will not complain about multiple global definitions in header files unless the globals are initialized, which they are not here.
   
   What is clear in any case that it depends on the toolchain and environment in some way that I do not fully understand.  The safest, best thing is just to extern the global.
