[Issue 127801] New: Inser Symbol does not combine Hebew consonants with the nikud (vowel)

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=127801

          Issue ID: 127801
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Inser Symbol does not combine Hebew consonants with
                    the nikud (vowel)
           Product: Writer
           Version: 4.1.3
          Hardware: All
                OS: OS/2
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: Normal
          Priority: P5 (lowest)
         Component: editing
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: smetz3@gmu.edu
  Target Milestone: ---

When I insert Hebrew text using Insert Symbols, the nikud (vowels) appears in a
separate character cell instead of being combined with the consonant. I don't
know Arabic, but I suspect a similar problem there.

I can confirm the issue with AOO 4.1.3 on ArcaOS 5.0.2.

Inserting the characters on Linux and Windows combines the consonant, so this
seems to be OS/2 related.

Can you also test how the document looks e.g. in OpenOffice on Windows?

Personally I think this is most likely related to the font engine in OS/2, so
you might want to open a ticket with Arca Noae:

I opened a ticket with Arca Noae and they told me that the problem is font
related. Specifically, they got correct results with Deja Vu. What bugs me is
that MT30 is supposed to be a Unicode font, so why doesn't it have the
combining attributes?

Would it be possible to display a warning when a user selects combining
characters in a font that doesn't support them?

Your bug report is being closed as NOT_AN_ISSUE due to a lack of information
which is needed in order to accurately reproduce and confirm the problem. We
encourage you to retest your bug against the latest release. If the issue is
still present in the latest stable release, we need the following information:

a) Provide details of your system including your operating system[1] and the
latest version of AOO that you have confirmed the bug to be present

b) Provide a step-by-step procedure to reproduce (the simpler will be the
better)

c) Provide any test case(s) which will help us confirm the problem (like a
sample document)

d) Provide screenshots of the problem if you think it might help

e) Read all comments and provide any requested information

Once all of this is done, please set the bug back to UNCONFIRMED and we will
attempt to reproduce the issue.

Apache OpenOffice 4.1.3 is the most recent available for OS/2. The steps are:

Open text document

Insert -> Special character...

Subset: Basic Hebrew

Click Aleph

Click Hiriq

Click Beth

Click Ok

Save as AOOnikud.odt

Screen capture to PMGRAB00.BMP

You can see in the attached screen capture that the Hiriq (dot) occupies a
separate character cell instead of being composed with the associated
consonant. The document displays correctly in, e.g., m$ word, so I assume that
the problem is specific to the rendering for OS/2.

Thanks!
I can confirm the correct behavior with DejaVu font (see screenshot).
