Please Talk to Infra about Git at Apache

Hi,

So many threads and so much volume of email that I don't have time to read.

Someone from the PPMC who has volunteered to admin GIT for Flex should get on IRC #asfinfra, introduce themselves, and start asking questions. Only then will real answers come.

Best Regards,
Dave

FYI - One of the open JIRA issues related to Git is:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-4642 Create a runbook for the git admin work

Thanks Bertrand. I found some info I needed, and I talked to some peeps in
the #asinfra IRC channel. The Git admin set up is currently written in
Python, so Python skills are a pre-req to help out w/ Infra's needs in the
backend. I'm getting myself caught up with it to see if I can familiarize
myself with the current backend code.

If someone else that already has Python skills wants to step up then raise
ur hand, otherwise I'll be in the corner w/ my Python book...

I'm trying to find a way to search through those without actually looking
manually throughout all of the months in this mailing list, is there an
easy way to search this?

I know for the Flex mailing list we have Markmail where I can do searches,
but I'm not sure how to find that for the infra mailing list. Sorry if its
somewhere obvious its just not easy navigating any of the Apache site.

You probably cannot access it, but the setup has probably been
discussed at http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/www-infrastructure-dev/
and/or in jira.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runbook - it's not specific to Git, and
our infra team usually stores theirs as text files in (private) svn
folders.

What is a Git runbook?

I've been searching through the Infra mailing list trying to figure out if
they use Gitosis or Gitolite, I want to set up my server using the git
admin they're using for Apache.

What I meant is create issues under FLEX, for this project to keep
track of its setup and of how issues were solved - independently from
issues on which infra needs to act on.

I agree that it would be good for Flex to nominate a contact person.

I've gone through all the Git tagged INFRA issues. Before I submit an INFRA
ticket to move from SVN to Git as the official repo and volunteer as the
point person I am getting familiar with administering Git.

I'm currently installing Gitolite on one of my servers and I am working to
replicate an SVN -> Git -> GitHub mirroring set up so I can play with
git-svn and figure out the workflow as well as the administration side of
it.

Once I get this all figured out then I will feel comfortable with being the
point person if no one else is willing to take the lead, I just want to be
re-familiarize myself with Gitosis and Gitolite.

Any chance you know which one is being used in Apache?

I would add that that person needs Git admin level skills to be a
useful point of contact.

IMO, creating issues at https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/FLEX
about that Git setup might help make sense of the current chaotic
flurry of Git-related email.

I checked out the entire svn repository from
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/flex/ (whiteboards, sdk,
falcon, site, whiteboards, utilities, everything...all 8.8GB of
it...took forever, by the way). I wanted to be thorough and make sure
the svn log would include every possible user. I've attached that
file as log-users.txt.

I then download the authors.txt from git.apache.org and ran the
shell-based while loop listed at http://fpaste.org/LJGR/. No Klaxons
need be sounded :). I can confirm that everyone in the commit log is
in the authors.txt file.

However, there are initial committers who haven't committed any code
yet. So I've attached 4 files.

log-users.txt: usernames pulled from the svn log using the command
listed at http://fpaste.org/LJGR/.
team-members.txt: http://incubator.apache.org/flex/team.html and
anyone who's in log-users.txt who isn't on this list who I know to be
a part of the project...namely Peter Ent
inferred-infra.txt: two unaccounted for usernames in log-users.txt who
are most likely from Infra
team-no-commits.txt: members of the team with commit access who
haven't shown up in the commit log yet

Even though I put an iCLA on file, it's probably better that a member
of the PPMC with commit access submit the ticket.

Hope that helps. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to
speed this up.

I think I might know enough enough python that I might be able to
help. At the very least, I'd be more than happy to take a look and
see if I can help move the ball forward.

I talked to pctony (Tony Stevenson) in IRC last night, and he said the wait
would probably be close to a month or so.

I asked about the skills required to be the point person, he recommended
obviously Git experience as well as strong Python. I don't know Python so I
will have to learn some of it to help out, unless someone else want to
volunteer to speed things up. Unless this isn't actually needed, the Python
bit, I'll be happy to volunteer. Otherwise it'll be a bit before I'm
comfortable enough w/ Python before I can look at asfgit-admin, I believe
that's what the admin app is called.

I suspect that we are talking on the order of days. If the project wants to move fast to all git then do the authors checks described and get the JIRA issue together. The delay may be starting the process either volunteer, credential or scheduling within infra.

Hi,

Thanks for clearing that up.

How long would you expect that the infra work would take? ie how long would the repository be read only? Roughly in fine as I know it not possible to know in advance would it be an order of days, weeks months?

First, the PMC signs off that they want the work to convert from SVN to GIT to be done.

Second, Infra does the work to migrate.

Third, the PMC checks and confirms that the GIT is a proper copy of the SVN. This is the sign-off mentioned. The detail needed depends on the history, etc.

Fourth, Infra makes the GIT archive read-write.

Fifth, if it is not possible to commit then it is a problem ... perhaps for a particular committer, perhaps for all.

Hi,

Curious to how this can be done (if there's no commit access):
"Report the status on the ticket and wait for the (P)PMC to sign off on the migration and then remove the nocommit to enable commits to the repo."

I would of though that part of the PMC sign off would include testing that you can commit etc?

Thanks,

Hi,

Via IRC - I've had a conversation with David Nalley (ke4qqq) who is working on the Git Run Book putting things all together.

He recommends that someone run the following scripts at http://fpaste.org/LJGR/ and generate an author's file from svn to help with git authorizations.

Results to be attached to the JIRA issue which should be created to "Migrate Apache Flex from SVN to GIT" when the project is ready to change.

There may be an option to keep SVN as a mirror of GIT.

Dave

Hi Jeff,

I appreciate your efforts. It may be necessary to have an apache id and be a committer.

Have you filed an iCLA[1]? If not then that would help.

PPMC / Committer volunteers?

Dave

Hi Dave,

I'm in the IRC channel as jconrad. I'm not a committer or PPMC
member, but I'll do whatever I'm able / allowed to do to move this
along.
