Weekly News Items?

Hi all,

Just a reminder that you're encouraged to submit news items for the
CloudStack Weekly News, here:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Apache+CloudStack+Weekly+News+-+6+May+2013

Also - wondering, what can I do to entice more folks to contribute to
this? I don't see much in the way of participation, so I'm curious if
this is an indication that people don't see the weekly news as a useful
effort, or...?

Best,

jzb

I was stating my personal opinion here... so I'm also OK if we (1)
define how we want to proceed as a project and (2) are consistent in
application (as Joe suggested).

I'm not -1 on this, just -0. Others can feel free to move this forward!

Here's my thoughts:

- Linking to an event in the calendar isn't endorsing so much as
informing people it's happening.

- Historically, I've put talks, etc., that are tutorials on CloudStack
in the events section even when they're part of an event that's paid.
(e.g. OSCON) Those events are also for-profit, and the talks are of
interest to our community. I see a subtle difference between "this talk
is happening at OSCON" and "Acme Cloud Company is doing paid training,"
but both situations are us pointing to a commercial venture.

I am OK with having a line between what's acceptable and not, so long as
we're consistent and the line is logical. An open registration event for
training (as opposed to an advertisement for in-house training that's
not of general interest) seems OK *to me* but I'll go with whatever
seems to be consensus.

Best,

Chip - thanks for that.

+1 on including other announcements that include ACS news.... I am ( probably like you) in a privileged position in that I know what a lot of what is going on in the commercial space around ACS..... I know what SatckIQ are up to, I know what Citrix are up to ,I know what the other dozens of vendors are up to. There may be many folks in this community who are not as aware and may actually find it useful to know what people are doing.

I really appreciate that this is getting into a very murky area and will have to be carefully watched

I want to be *very* clear that I'm not against community support for what you are doing. The specific concern I had was about "endorsement" of a commercial "service" and the implication it would have for how we would treat commercial "product" announcements.

However, looking back through past discussions on this topic, I believe the overriding point is that as long as we are consistent and open about inclusion, there are no problems. As stated, this is a pointer to something.

In fact, I think that we should consider pointing to product announcements that include CloudStack news as well (example: we could have pointed to http://www.stackiq.com/products/rocks-cloud/ when it was announced).

I'll sit down now... +1 for adding it.

Chip, I've been very clear, this *is* a commercial offering, we will be making money. ShapeBlue makes its money out of services around Cloudstack. This is what we do to feed our kids.

These courses have been in development for some time, we have invested time & money in creating a structured course with classroom & online version and also a whole set of hands-on labs. To be frank, I would expect *some* degree of support from the community on this. I'm taking a commercial risk, creating something that that surely can only help ACS long term
I have offered/donated 20% of the places on the Santa Clara course to the community free of charge.

I am really trying to make sure that we respect the rules & governance of the project (which I have to do carefully as we are a vendor who primarily are about CloudStack). I think we've always managed to do that (if we haven't, I would like to be told).

However, if there is a training course being run in our technology , then people should know about it; and it SHOULD be in a weekly news update IMO.
If the course was being run by somebody else, I would say the same thing.; I would want to know about it. We should not refuse to mention it because somebody is making some money out of it.

I am not asking for endorsement, I am asking to help communicate something that people may find useful & want to purchase.

My only real flame is that, from my perspective, the news' sole purpose is
to 'make aware' events relating to CloudStack. The news does not endorse,
only inform.

We as a community cannot provide structured, organized training. We don't
have resources to train/operate/pay an educational staff. The reality is
once we leave the realm of code, we clearly see that most events and other
non-code aspects are planned and operated by people who are paid to do so.

I see no conflict of interest in as mentioning a company delivering a pure
educational service. However this would change if any sort of side-sales or
other service marketing were the intent.

My 2 cents.

Maybe? I don't have a strong objection, as long as they're CloudStack
specific and they're added with the same format as other events. Anyone

Giles,

I was thinking the same thing, but we kinda need a ruling. Technically you
are offering training on CloudStack, but for Profit. I think it's a great
value add to the collaboration conference to those who want it, and we
aren't advocating any of Shapeblues services, just the opportunity to look
at the training specific to CS...

Hi all,

Just a reminder that you're encouraged to submit news items for the CloudStack Weekly News, here:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Apache+CloudStack+Weekly+News+-+6+May+2013

Also - wondering, what can I do to entice more folks to contribute to this? I don't see much in the way of participation, so I'm curious if this is an indication that people don't see the weekly news as a useful effort, or...?

Hi Joe,

Great - thanks! I will add our next meetup for the CloudStack SF Bay Area Users group to be held on June 27th at SAP Labs in Palo Alto, CA to the newsletter.

Also, we have an evening event pending for the CloudStack Collaboration Conference but I will need to get that confirmed and then announce it.

BTW - I personally think the weekly newsletter is a useful effort. It's pretty helpful to see all the things that are happening in the Apache CloudStack community summed up into one newsletter.

Best regards,

Karen

I try to stick to a similar format that's used by other "weekly news"
pubs in other open source projects. (Maybe I'm wrong?)

See DWN as an example:

http://www.debian.org/News/weekly/2013/09/

Groovy. Thanks!

Similar to last week's:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Apache+CloudStack+Weekly+News+-+29+April+2013

It might also be a good section to call out any specific unclaimed
issues that we need addressed.

Cool. I definitely agree on that, I guess I was just thinking that since
the call for papers, sponsors, registration are all underway it's a great
time to keep it fresh. (Sorry used to work in a paper)

I'm also working on trolling the user / marking / dev discussions as well.

What were you wanting in the Jira section?

The events section is ordered by date, not by importance. We have
already have mentioned the CCC stuff in previous issues, but feel free
to put the CFP in the lede.

What I'm really asking for is more summaries of discussions on dev@,
though. (And for people to make sure they add events that they're
running, or links to their own blog posts...) There's a LOT of traffic
and discussion on dev@, marketing@, and user@, and I worry that I miss

I really think we have to move the collaboration conference up to the top
headline though. It's the premier piece of CS news out there. So I'm going
