Some regexp bugs fixed

Hi Jon,

Would you mind applying one more patch [1] to the regexp before you make 
'final' release [2]? It fixes several long-standing bugs with regexp, 
see list of bugs marked as dupes of bug #19329 [3].

Good amount of test cases [4] is included with this patch, and all tests 
go through just fine, with one modification to test #174 which is AFAIU 
not correct [5]. Proposed patch includes change to this test.
