[D] Regarding dataset related ownership & permission [superset]
GitHub user Dhruvin4530 created a discussion: Regarding dataset related ownership & permission
@dosu
I want the following: Is it possible to achieve this in Superset?
1. If team A creates the datasets, then only team A can edit them; no other team should be able to edit them.
2. All other team can able to use those datasets to create the charts and dashboards.

Good news — **the first part is already automatic**. When any user creates a dataset through the Superset UI or API, they are automatically added as an owner with no manual steps required. This is handled in the command layer's `populate_owner_list` logic: if the `owners` field is empty or omitted, the current user becomes the sole owner [[1]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/commands/utils.py). So if a Team A member creates a dataset, they're the owner; if a Team B member creates one, they're the owner. No manual intervention needed.
For the second part — **allowing other teams to use those datasets without being able to edit them** — there's no per-dataset automation built in, but you can achieve it automatically at a broader scope:
**Recommended approach: Use database or schema-level permissions.**
Instead of granting `datasource_access` on each individual dataset, grant the consuming teams' roles access at the **database** or **schema** level [[2]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/security/manager.py). This means any new dataset created under that database/schema is automatically accessible to those teams for building charts and dashboards, with zero manual steps after initial role setup.
Here's how to set it up once:
1. Create a custom role (e.g., `team_b_consumers`) for the consuming team.
2. Grant that role `database_access` on the relevant database — or `schema_access` for finer control — plus `can_read` on Chart/Dashboard resources and other read-level permissions they need.
3. **Do not** grant `can_write` on `Dataset` to this role, and **do not** add these users as dataset owners.
With this setup:
- **Creators automatically become owners** and can edit their own datasets [[3]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/commands/dataset/create.py).
- **Non-owners with database/schema access** can query and use the datasets for charts/dashboards but cannot edit them, since editing requires ownership (or Admin role) [[2]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/security/manager.py).
- **New datasets** created under that database/schema are automatically covered — no per-dataset permission grants needed.
This is the most hands-off approach available natively. Would you like help with the specific permission list to include in the consumer role?

Yes, this workflow is fully supported in Apache Superset by combining dataset ownership with role-based access control (RBAC).
Here is how to set it up:
### Architecture: Dataset Owners vs General Consumers
In Superset:
- To **edit or modify a dataset** (change columns, metrics, calculated SQL expressions), a user must be listed as an **Owner** of that dataset (or be a Superset Admin).
- To **use a dataset to build charts and dashboards**, a user only needs **read access** to the dataset and **datasource access** to the underlying database schema.
### Step-by-Step Configuration
#### 1. Configure the General Role for Other Teams (Read and Chart Creation)
In **Settings -> List Roles**, edit your standard analyst role (e.g., `Alpha` or create a custom role `Team_Consumer`):
- Ensure it contains permissions:
- `can read on Dataset` (allows browsing the dataset catalog)
- `can read on Explore` (allows opening the chart builder)
- `can write on Chart` (allows saving new charts)
- `can write on Dashboard` (allows building dashboards)
- `datasource access on [your_database].[your_schema]` (allows querying the underlying tables)
- **Do NOT grant** `can write on Dataset` or `can delete on Dataset` to this general role.
#### 2. Configure Team A's Permissions (Dataset Authors)
Team A members will have the same base role plus ownership:
- When a user from Team A creates a dataset (via **Data -> Datasets -> Add Dataset**), Superset automatically adds that user as the dataset **Owner**.
- In the dataset edit modal, Team A users can add other members of Team A into the **Owners** field.
- Only users listed under **Owners** (and Admins) are allowed to save modifications to the dataset definition.
#### 3. Resulting Behavior
- Users from other teams can select the dataset in Explore, write custom metrics at the chart level, and build dashboards.
- When users from other teams try to edit the dataset configuration itself, the save action is restricted and denied.
- Team A maintains full control over the schema, descriptions, and certified metrics.

@dosu So the 2nd step is manual and everytime if any team creates the dataset, we will have to follow the same process?

Superset's permission model is role-based, and datasets are the unit of access. To get "only Team A can edit their own datasets" you combine roles with ownership:
1. **Ownership** — every dataset has a `created_by` owner. In newer Superset versions the owner concept is enforced for editing; admins and the dataset owner can edit a dataset, other users need explicit grants.
2. **Roles for editing** — create two roles:
- `Team A Editors` → grant the dataset-level permissions for the datasets Team A owns (the `datasource_access`/`schema_access` on those datasets plus the model permissions to edit, e.g. `can_edit` on `Dataset`).
- `Dataset Users` → grant only usage permissions: `can_perm`/`can_read` on datasets plus `datasource_access` so they can build dashboards/charts from them, but **not** `can_edit`.
3. **Don't give everyone `all_datasource_access` or the generic dataset edit permission** — that's what lets any user with the role edit any dataset. Scope permissions per dataset/schema instead.
Practical checklist:
- Remove the default `gamma`/`alpha` roles' broad datasource edit permissions from the users you don't want editing.
- Assign users their team role (`Team A Editors` vs `Dataset Users`) and keep the roles minimal.
- Test with a throwaway user per team to confirm the matrix (create / edit / use) behaves as expected.
If you're on Superset 4+, also check `FEATURE_FLAGS` — the ownership behavior has been refined across versions, so the exact flag names can differ by release. The key idea is always the same: restrict `can_edit` on the Dataset model to the owning team's role and grant others only read/use permissions.
If this answers your question, feel free to mark it as the accepted answer!

Not quite — the setup I described is a **one-time configuration**, not something you repeat per dataset.
Here's the distinction:
- **One-time setup (done once):** Create the consumer role (e.g., `team_b_consumers`), grant it `database_access` or `schema_access` on the relevant database/schema, and assign the consuming team's users to that role. This is the only manual step.
- **After that, it's fully automatic:** Any new dataset created by *any* team under that database/schema is automatically accessible to all teams that hold the database/schema-level permission. No per-dataset action is needed. The creator automatically becomes the owner (and can edit), while everyone else with the database/schema role can use it but not edit it.
The only scenario where you'd need to repeat any manual steps is if you add an entirely **new database or schema** to Superset — in that case you'd need to grant the consumer role access to that new database/schema once. But for datasets within already-configured databases/schemas, everything flows automatically.
So to summarize: one-time role setup per database/schema → all future datasets under it are automatically covered for both ownership (edit) and consumption (read/use).

<!-- Answer -->
Yes, this is achievable in Superset using its ownership model and object-scoped permissions. Superset separates **edit access** from **use/query access** into two independent dimensions:
**1. Restricting edits to Team A only:**
- Add Team A members as **owners** of the datasets they create. Admins and owners bypass access checks and can edit the dataset [[1]](https://app.dosu.dev/a28d3c7e-a9d3-459e-9fb6-3a6f9ff4f357/documents/68920020-13a9-41cb-a578-aaea4405b0b5).
- Ensure Team A's role includes `can_write` on the `Dataset` resource, which is the FAB permission governing dataset CRUD operations (create, edit, delete) [[2]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/migrations/versions/2020-12-10_15-05_45731db65d9c_security_converge_datasets.py).
- **Do not** add members of other teams as dataset owners. Without ownership (and without Admin role), they will not be able to edit those datasets.
**2. Allowing other teams to use the datasets for charts/dashboards:**
- Each dataset automatically gets an object-specific `datasource_access` permission (e.g., `[my_database].[my_table](id:123)`) when it is created [[3]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/security/manager.py).
- Create a custom role for the other teams and grant the relevant `datasource_access` permissions for the datasets they need to consume [[4]](https://app.dosu.dev/a28d3c7e-a9d3-459e-9fb6-3a6f9ff4f357/documents/59b6e1d7-314d-42cc-8064-c4f93c7103bd). This gives them query/read access without edit rights.
- Alternatively, granting `all_datasource_access` or `database_access` / `schema_access` at a broader scope will let them use all datasets under that database or schema.
**In short:** make Team A the owners with `can_write` on Dataset, and give other teams only `datasource_access` on the specific datasets (or broader database/schema access). The two permission types are independent — having `datasource_access` does **not** grant edit ability [[3]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/security/manager.py).
Note that `datasource_access` permissions are never assigned to built-in roles (Admin/Alpha/Gamma) automatically — they must be managed through custom roles [[4]](https://app.dosu.dev/a28d3c7e-a9d3-459e-9fb6-3a6f9ff4f357/documents/59b6e1d7-314d-42cc-8064-c4f93c7103bd).
Would you like more detail on how to set up the custom roles or assign `datasource_access` permissions in practice?
