[REFACTORING] API Extension

Hi all,

as I suggested some API Extensions over the last weeks, I took a little time to create a confluence site for that where all can be discussed together and perhaps a new (extended!) API can be drawn [1].

From my perspective we should not do any breaking changes but perhaps deprecate some methods, if we think its reasonable.

PS.: I also took the time to clean up Jira a bit and update some issues for the upcoming 0.5 release
