Announcing 0.3.0

It is with great pleasure that I announce the very first release of
Apache Cassandra, 0.3.0[1]

A projects first release is a significant milestone and one that our
burgeoning community should be proud of. Many thanks to everyone that
submitted patches and bug reports, helped with testing, documented,
organized, or just asked the important questions.

Without further ado:

The official download:
http://www.apache.org/dyn/closer.cgi/incubator/cassandra/0.3.0/apache-cassandra-incubating-0.3.0-bin.tar.gz
SVN Tag:
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/cassandra/tags/cassandra-0.3.0-final/

[1] DISCLAIMER: Apache Cassandra is an effort undergoing incubation at
The ASF, sponsored by the Apache Incubator Project Management Committee
(PMC).

Incubation is required of all newly accepted projects until a further
review indicates that the infrastructure, communications, and decision
making process have stabilized in a manner consistent with other
successful ASF projects.

While incubation status is not necessarily a reflection of the
completeness or stability of the code, it does indicate that the project
has yet to be fully endorsed by the ASF.

All poddling committers should have write access to the
people.apache.org repository at
/x1/www/people.apache.org/repo/m2-incubating-repository, so just copy
the release artifacts there. These days though Incubator poddlings can
also use the Maven central repository instead of the Incubator
repository if you like so coping your artifacts to
/x1/www/people.apache.org/repo/m2-ibiblio-rsync-repository will get
them automatically replicated to http://repo2.maven.org/maven2.

The artifacts that get copied there MUST be from an official ASF
release, so have been voted on in a release vote and meet all the ASF
release requirements like being signed and contain appropriate
LICENSE/NOTICE/DISCLAIMER files. The usual way to do that is to
include a temporary staging repository in a release vote so the
artifacts can be vetted, you can see an example of this in a recent

The 0.3.0 release is immutable now that its been voted on, any changes
would require a new vote. It is possible to put release artifacts into
a maven repository after the fact but to do that the artifacts must
meet the licensing requirements - eg include the appropriate ASF
LICENSE and NOTICE files.

Looking in apache-cassandra-incubating-0.3.0.jar from the 0.3.0
release that does not include LICENSE/NOTICE files so unfortunately
can not be distributed from the maven repositories. You'd need to fix
the build to add the LICENSE/NOTICE files to the cassandra jar and do
a whole new release or just release the new jar so have a vote just on
that artifact.

If I understand you correctly, the answer is yes, you would need to
retroactively update 0.3.0. Even for simple changes this is frowned upon
so it sounds like we're talking about a new release (0.3.1) in order to
be able to do this.

Interesting. Could you please update
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-301 with this
information?

I just ran a modified version of Hiram's Maven patch on 0.3.0-final (
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-301).
After adding some more dependencies (ZooKeeper and Lucene deps were missing)
it installed fine, also removed two other.
I guess 0.3.0-final could be retrofitted with a POM (the build file for
Maven). The source does not need to be modified but the retrofitted POM must
be deployed alongside the generated binary JAR of Cassandra (Maven handles
this for you, but the repo version of Cassandra will then differ in the
sense of it having a POM file while the SVN/source version doesn't).

However, some dependencies are defined as system dependencies, meaning that
the end-user/developer using Cassandra will need provide these dependencies
themselves.
This defeats the purpose of the Maven repository system and I guess the only
reason Hiram put them there was because he couldn't find the needed
dependencies in publicly available repositories. Perhaps there is a way
around this? Otherwise, we'll have to find repos that offer these deps
before we can (safely) put Cassandra in the incubator repo.

Ian, a committer with write access to the incubator repo can push artifacts.
Hiram included a Maven profile for signing and creating an Apache release.

I know next to nothing about maven, is this something that requires the
distribution to include a pom.xml? Put another way, 0.3.0 is immutable
at this point, so is this something that can still be done or would it
require another release?

It would be great to get your input on the patch I submitted on top of
Hiram's Maven work at
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-301
It looks good to me, but a +1 from another Maven user would be better.

you need to give a tiny bit of time (say 24 hours) for the mirrors to
