                 Key: COMDEV-64
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/COMDEV-64
             Project: Community Development
          Issue Type: Question
          Components: Mentoring
            Reporter: James Hunter
            Priority: Trivial

Greetings,

My name is James Hunter. I am studying to become a computer programmer at Pellissippi State Technical Community College in Knoxville, TN. I am writing you in hopes that you may be able to assist me with a college assignment that I working on.

I have to according to my instructor:

"Complete & Submit the Career Project Proposal prior to interviewing or shadowing. Interview someone in your desired career or volunteer or job shadow in your chosen career. Some careers make job shadowing difficult. For example, a psychologist can't allow you to sit in on a counseling session. In a case like this, you will interview instead of job shadow. You must have a signature and their contact information from the person you are shadowing/interviewing."
Although she ask for a signature this is not necessary but I would like to interview you if it this possible. Please let me know if this is something that you would be willing to do, I am sorry that I am approaching you in an e-mail for this but I don't know anyone in the computer programming field. Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,
James Hunter

Hi James

One of the mentoring programs we offer at Apache is the "Local Mentors Program". You can read more about it at http://community.apache.org/localmentors.html , but in summary it provides a way for people to meet up with experienced Apache developers who live near them, who'll be happy to answer some questions and provide mentoring and direction over a coffee / beer / etc

Being based in Knoxville you're in luck, as there is someone nearby who's a member of the program:
http://community.zones.apache.org/find_people/?latitude=36.16589&longitude=-86.78444&type=lm&rows=10

It'd be worth you getting in touch with Matt, and seeing if he'd be able to meet up for a brief chat at some point to help you out. He may not be able to help with everything, but he should have ideas on any parts he can't assist with, and he's only up the road!

Hi James,

Thanks for contacting us.

We might be able to find someone for you to interview. However, first can you please provide a little more information. For example, what form will the interview take, what area of computer programming are you interested in, how long will the interview take? It might also make sense to provide a little background about yourself and your goals with respect to career. This will help us better match you to someone with knowledge about your objectives.

You all are awesome!!!! This is the reason I went to the open source community first. I have been a Linux user for years. Starting out in Red Hat 3.0. When I first started using Linux, I set up a local network and installed Apache after which I set up Webmin. I have been for quite a while, a big supporter of open source. Thank you both for your help. I will contact Matt tomorrow after school.

Sincerely, James Hunter
P.S. I can't wait to write my first contributory program.
